The Orange International Street Fair is a time-honored tradition in Old Town Orange. In 1973, the city was looking for ideas to celebrate its one-hundredth year. Inspired by the Orange Street Fair of 1910, it was decided that for their centennial celebration the city would have the Orange International Street Fair (OISF). The Fair was so successful that it has become an annual tradition during Labor Day weekend.
Each year, the graphic design seniors of Chapman University break into groups to develop and pitch their different themes to the OISF Board of Directors. My group decided to focus on the nostalgia and tradition of the Street Fair. Since its beginning in 1973, the OISF has always looked to the past for inspiration, thus reinventing the Street Fair held in 1910. Based on this knowledge, my group decided to embrace a vintage, distressed aesthetic. We utilized a script font, muted color palette, and classic illustration style to create a retro vibe.
My team’s theme of, ‘A Taste of Tradition’, was chosen as the winning campaign for the 2017 Orange International Street Fair. The designs created by myself and my four peers were showcased in the form of a poster, commemorative pin, visitor guide, map, photo backdrop, apparel, and street banners.
